National Teen Driver Safety Week

The Law Offices of Barnes and Cohen would like to remind parents or guardians of teen drivers that October 15th-21st is National Teen Driver Safety Week. According to the National Safety Council, “car crashes are the leading cause of unintentional deaths for U.S. teenagers”. Teens are involved in more accidents due to their inexperience driving. By keeping up with driving practice, your teen will be reminded how dangerous neglect driving can be.

The Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles department stated that teen drivers, between the ages of 15-19, account for approximately 5% of licensed drivers in Florida. According to data from 2022, approximately 23% of teen drivers involved in a fatal accident were due to neglect driving. Examples of neglect driving includes: running stop signs/lights, following to closely, improper lane changes, and speeding. Parents and guardians are the biggest influence on teen’s choices when driving behind the wheel. Encourage the young drivers in your life to drive smart while on the road.

Key factors for teen drivers to stay safe behind the wheel include:

  • Wear a seat belt
  • No speeding
  • Stay away from distractions such as using a phone
  • Keep extra passengers to a minimum
  • ZERO driving while under the influence
  • Keep up maintenance on your vehicle (i.e. tire pressure, windshield wipers, brakes)
