Dog Bite Injuries are often preventable. Over 31,000 reconstructive surgeries were performed as a result of a serious dog bite injury in one year. Children are more likely to need medical attention after a dog bite. We hate to see people injured in an accident but we believe it is especially difficult when that injury happens to a child. Pets often play a special role in a child’s life. Even if you do not have a pet in your home children will no doubt encounter dogs around the neighborhood or in the homes of friends and family. Educating your children on safety tips and other precautions may help prevent dog bite injuries. Most owners have a prejudice idea that their dog would never bite.
Dog Bite Prevention Tips
Before you adopt a family pet:
- Consult with a veterinarian or responsible breeder to learn what breeds are best for your family
- Consider adopting from a shelter. Some mixed breeds are very gentle and good natured.
- Prepare for the arrival of your pet by reading books related to training and the breed or breeds you are considering.
- Educate your children about responsible behavior around their new pet
- Spend time with the dog as a family before you bring the dog into the household
- Be sensitive to any signs of the dog’s aggression especially with younger children
- Find out as much of the dog’s history as possible
Dog Safety Tips for Children:
- Do Not Approach an unfamiliar dog

- Remember most owners have the biased attitude that their dog would never bite anyone.
