As Drowsy Driving Prevention month comes to a halt, Barnes & Cohen would like to remind our community the dangers of driving without enough rest.

According to research completed by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, approximately 20% of fatal crashes are associated to drowsy driving.

 

Due to the increased number of drivers behind the wheel, police agencies are reporting auto accidents related to driving drowsy are just as dangerous as being under the influence. If you’re tired, pull over and rest!

Some important signs to recognize of drowsiness includes:

  • Occasional drifting lanes
  • Difficulty remembering driving
  • Frequent yawning or blinking

According to the CDC, the most common groups of people with greater risk of drowsy driving includes: Commercial truck drivers, drivers who work long shifts, young adult and teen drivers, and drivers behind the wheel between midnight and 6 a.m.

 

Tips on Preventing Drowsy Driving

  • Avoid drinking alcohol before driving. Alcohol impairs reaction times and skills needed to drive safely.
  • Develop a sleeping schedule that benefits you.
