Check Twice for Motorcycles

A 34-year old motorcyclist died Thursday, October 5, 2023 after colliding into another vehicle in Nassau County on U.S. 17.

According to the crash report, “the man riding the motorcycle was headed south on U.S. 17 around 6:20 a.m. when the SUV, which was headed north, turned into its path” (Frazier, 2023). The victim died at the scene and was wearing a helmet. However, the driver of the SUV involved was not injured and was wearing a seat belt.

While most auto accident fatalities are related to passenger vehicles, motorcycle fatalities are on the rise in Florida due to the appealing weather and roads. The most common reasons for motorcycle accidents include: low visibility of motorcyclists, unmarked road hazards, hitting an object, and lane splitting. There are many risks when operating a motorcycle but the top safety measure is to wear a helmet.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gives these tips when driving a motorcycle:

  • Always wear a helmet. Helmets are proven to reduce injury and save lives.
  • No lane splitting. While it can be tempting to change lanes in traffic, it increases the likelihood of an accident. Obey traffic laws and ride with the flow of traffic.
  • Do not drink and drive. Alcohol consumption before driving any vehicle leads to impairment and slow reflexes.
  • Have great motorcycle insurance. Having insurance will help you after an accident whether it be for a new bike, medical expenses, etc.
