National Teen Driver Safety Week

October 20th – 26th is National Teen Driver Safety Week! In every teen’s life, turning sixteen (16) and being able to drive is one of the best weeks. However, with little experience on the roads, teens are more susceptible to auto accidents. Barnes Cohen & Sullivan is here to help the injured. If you have been injured due to the negligence of another, call us for a free consultation.

According to the United States Department of Transportation, “motor vehicles are a leading cause of death for teens (15-18 years old) in the United States. In Florida, teen drivers represent approximately 5% of licensed drivers and more than 11% of crashes in Florida involve teens (FLHSMV).

Risk Factors for Teens Behind the Wheel

  • Alcohol & drug use
  • Distracted driving
  • Speeding
  • Drowsy driving
  • Not wearing a seat belt

According to the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), “in 2022, just over 23% (one in four) of teen drivers involved in fatal crashes were cited for speeding and/or aggressive driving behaviors such as following too closely, running a stop light/sign, unsafe/improper lane change, improper passing or failing to yield the right of way”.

Parents can be the biggest influencers on teens’ choices behind the wheel if they take the time to talk with their teens about some of the biggest driving risks. Many parents are their children’s role models. When teens see parents and other adults obeying the rules of the road, they get the message. Assess how you are driving and think about how your driving can influence your teen.

Be diligent when driving, especially during times when it is more likely teen drivers are on the roads. If you have been injured in an auto accident, call Barnes Cohen & Sullivan.
