This age group is also more likely to be distracted by  a cellphone or other electronics. Children can be impulsive and forget to look before they step out into traffic.

Prevent Child Pedestrian Accidents. Take Steps to Educate your children on Pedestrian Safety Facts.

  1. Never use electronic devices while you are crossing the street, game devices, earbuds and cellphones can wait.
  2. Cross streets only at crosswalks or designated areas.
  3. Walk on the sidewalk whenever possible.
  4. If you must walk on the road, walk on the shoulder facing traffic.
  5. Increase your visibility with a brightly colored vest or Jacket. Carry a flashlight if you are out in the evening or early morning at dusk hours.
  6. Cross at crossing guards whenever possible.

If your child walks to school, walk with them until you feel confident that they understand the safety rules in the area. Let them lead the way before you trust them to go on their own.
